God in the Midst of Our Struggles

Sometimes life seems overwhelming. Our problems loom over us, tempting us into a rut, wallowing in self-concern.

Yet for all that our struggles seem gigantic, if we truly call ourselves Christians, is not God bigger than any mountain in front of us? Indeed, Jesus said if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can move mountains (Matthew 17:20)! So it is through faith in God that we will triumph.

Remember the story of David and Goliath? Goliath was a renowned Philistine warrior, a giant; yet young David asked, “who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God”? When all the Israelite warriors fled, David, the sheepherder, met Goliath in the name of the Lord of Hosts, and defeated him (1 Samuel 17).

If we confront our problems alone, they are insurmountable. Yet with God on our side, He gives us the grace we need to triumph. That is the mystery that Saint Paul speaks of—"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). We must allow Jesus to reign and to live in and through us. He is bigger than our scariest problems. Have faith in Him.
