Who cares about someone else's life resolutions? Well, maybe you do. Maybe you're struggling to figure out what to do with your time, and seeing someone else's resolve to make better use of his time will inspire you to do the same. Maybe you can relate and reminisce about similar steps you've taken in this mortal sojourn we call life. Whatever the case, I've resolved to share what I intend to do for the rest of my life. Whether you care or not is up for you to decide.
It doesn't matter how many times I have to write it and modify these resolutions. What matters is that I devote myself to the causes I believe in, the missions that have been on my heart, mind, and soul for years.
Writing Resolution
Writing is paramount. It has been on my heart, mind and soul for as long as I can remember. I once strongly believed that the world still needed writers to deepen our sense of purpose in life. I admit, concerns for money and artificial intelligence have stymied my motivation to write. However, the fact that I've lost interest in writing in recent years should not change my mission. When I don't see the point in writing, I'm usually just tired or depressed. Writing does have a point, and it's a really sharp one.
Therefore ...
Whereas we need good writers to keep us in touch with our imagination, share new ideas, and inspire positive change ...
Whereas my passion for writing is so strong that it leaves me restless and unfulfilled when I do not write ...
Whereas the hours fly by and a deep, abiding peace comes over me when I do write ...
Whereas I have dozens of drafts for articles and novels that eagerly wait to be completed ...
Whereas I already have 18 years of experience as a professional published writer and editor, and ...
Whereas I began Rambling Spirit 10 years ago with the intention of contributing to a renaissance in the liberal arts, especially literature ...
Therefore, be it resolved that I, David Kilby, shall devote at least two hours a day six days a week to writing and publish an article a day on ramblingspirit.com.
Catholic World Report Resolution
Catholic World Report deserves its own resolution. Working as managing editor has been my favorite job not just in recent years but in my whole life. Ignatius Press has been there for me, providing the most reliable income for me in these past four difficult years.
Therefore ...
Whereas Catholic World Report is conducive to my vocation as a writer as it involves not only some writing but also editing tasks which I love ...
Whereas it is a Catholic publication that anchors my faith when the storms of life get crazy ...
Whereas I always respected Ignatius Press and aspired to work with them even in the early days of my writing career ...
Therefore, be it resolved that I shall devote at least two hours a day six days a week to Catholic World Report.
Driving Gigs Resolution
I have other commitments as well. For instance, driving gigs have been a flexible means of financial sustenance for years now for me. Therefore ...
Whereas driving gigs have become an enjoyable, practical source of income ...
Whereas ridesharing and delivery services have become staple conveniences in today's society ...
Whereas the job has several desirable benefits such as the ability to work whenever, wherever, however and with whomever I want ...
Whereas I need a supplemental income to make up for time spent on other important tasks that do not provide income ...
Whereas the main driving gig apps I use are DoorDash, Roadie, Lyft, Uber, and Grubhub, forming the acronym "DR LUG" ...
Therefore, be it resolved that I shall devote at least two hours a day six days a week to driving gigs, a.k.a DR LUG.
Real Estate Resolution
Real estate is a thorn in my side. At least half the time, I wonder why I even got into it. However, my vision for Rambling Spirit requires something more than writing.
Therefore ...
Whereas the vision and mission for Rambling Spirit involves the revitalization of our society and culture ...
Whereas that revitalization must take place not only through media and written content, but also within our built environment and communities ...
Whereas the might of the pen is in its ability to make substantial, tangible changes in the real world, not just in the hearts and minds of readers ...
Whereas the real estate sector provides a massive network of professionals who make big decisions who influence our society and culture ...
Whereas God is always creating and recreating, and calls on us to participate in the resurrection of society, which includes its institutions and its edifices ...
Whereas, if done right, my real estate endeavors shall compliment the mission and vision of Rambling Spirit ...
Whereas my driving gigs resolution can compliment my real estate commitment if I keep a record of the distressed properties I find while driving ...
Whereas I established Rebuilders Property Solutions, LLC to partake in my mission as a Christian to proclaim God's resurrective power ...
And whereas the housing crisis, soaring home prices, urban sprawl, and hopelessness are serious issues in our society that need to be resolved ...
Therefore, be it resolved that I shall devote at least two hours a day six days a week to my real estate business to bring distressed properties back to life, and help solve the housing crisis by providing more affordable homes, while subsequently reducing urban sprawl, revitalizing struggling communities, and providing hope to the people in those communities.
Other Resolutions
These four resolutions will constitute my work schedule and take up at least the standard eight hours of the work day. If I do not devote the allotted two hours to one of these commitments, I shall make up for it within a month.
The perfect day, where I abide by the schedule I made for myself, shall include the following tasks as well:
I shall devote an hour in the morning to prayer, reading, and breakfast, ideally at 6 a.m.
I shall devote an hour to exercise and hygiene, ideally at 10 a.m.
I shall end my day with prayer, reading, and journaling. Ideally my day shall end at 10 p.m. after examining my conscience and planning the next day.
Final Remarks
These commitments are about freedom, which is about doing all I can to fulfill my purpose. Freedom is not about avoiding commitment. It's about committing myself to the mission and vision I believe in most, the one God---the author of freedom---gave me.
Therefore, be it resolved that each commitment in this resolution constitutes the actions necessary to fulfill the vision and mission God gave me. Lord, help me to fulfill this calling.
